Giovanni Grubas (Grubacs)

Giovanni Grubas (Grubacs) - 19th Century Paintings

(Venice 1830–1919 Pula)
The Entrance to the Canal Grande with Santa Maria della Salute and the Punta della Dogana, signed G. Grubas, oil on canvas, 54.5 x 76.5 cm, framed, (GG)

Catalogued and illustrated in:
Fabrizio Magani, La Venezia dei Grubacs, ZeL Edizioni, Ponzano Veneto 2017, p. 101.

The painting represents one of the most famous and popular views in Venice: The Entrance to the Grand Canal. To the left in the foreground we see the Punta della Dogana where all boats entering Venice had to pay custom and Santa Maria della Salute behind.
This beautiful panoramic view illustrates Grubacs’s assimilation of Canaletto’s subject matter with luminous colour palette. Boats and gondolas are ferrying people across.
Giovanni Grubacs was a famous and prolific artist during his lifetime depicting Venice at different times of day and night. The present work should be considered among the artist’s very best painting.
