...Ein von Idealismus bestimmtes Bekenntnis inmitten der seelischen und künstlerischen Isolation im Krieg. Dieser Pflicht, als Kriegsmaler die Ereignisse „verherrlichen“ zu müssen, widersetzte er sich als künstlerischer Realist. …

…Wie sehr sich Walde an die vorgegebene Realität bei seinen Gemäldemotiven gehalten hatte, wird beim Handgranatenwerfer deutlich: weniger die Aggression faszinierte Walde, vielmehr die Spannung der Körperdarstellung im Sinne des Baumfällers von Ferdinand Hodler. Das Modellphoto benützte Walde als direkte Vorlage, korrigierte die hinter dem Kopf verdeckt gehaltene Handgranate und gewann dadurch eine prägnante Darstellung. Eingebunden in einen fast kubistisch strukturierten Hintergrund…
