1935 Steyr 100 convertible

1935 Steyr 100 convertible - Classic Cars

Owned by the consignor’s family since the early 1990s!

Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG presented its new mid-range vehicle, the Steyr 100, in 1934. Aviation pioneer Karl Jeschnke had succeeded Ferdinand Porsche as chief engineer, and it was under his auspices that this new, aerodynamic automobile was created. It was available as a saloon car without B-pillar and with doors opening in opposing directions, as well as in the form of an enchanting convertible. Beneath the bonnet, Steyr always kept things state-of-the-art: independent suspension and a semi-synchronous gearbox ensured a highly positive reception, but also a fairly hefty price. The four-cylinder engine with 1.4 litres of displacement and 32 hp accelerated the little Styrian to a top speed north of 100 km/h. Max Reisch was the first to reach the top of the - as yet incomplete - Großglockner high Alpine road in a Steyr 100, and his car continued to accompany him 42,000 km around the world.

This Steyr 100 convertible was purchased by the father of the consignor as a restoration object in the early 1990s. The car was largely complete, but still required renovation worthy of its class. A unit from the successor model - the Steyr 200 - was mounted as the engine, exploiting the 100 cc extra to deliver 3 hp of added power. The refrigerator grill this also from the successor, which in turn had adopted it from the 220. In the years after its completion, the diminutive Steyr was in the exquisite company of a collection of extraordinary pre-war cars and was taken out for a spin on a regular basis. Left stationary for a while, it was recently brought up to scratch and finally submitted for individual approval after 25 years, just in time for the auction. Today it again reveals its charming patina, turns heads with its irresistible charisma and is rightly considered a piece of Austria’s automotive history!
