On the stretcher old paper labels inscribed: Sagorsk (which, after the fall of communism, is again referred to as Sergiev Posad, as before 1930) is a town approximately 100 km north of Moscow; with its superb Monastery of the Holy Trinity, built between the 15th and the 18th centuries, Sagorsk is one of the most important centres of the Russian church, a pilgrimage site. The workshop of the USSR Artistic Fund, a substructure of the Union of Soviet Artists, has existed since the mid-1950s. The present work seems to have been painted between the mid 1950s and 1970.
