The present work, Heuschober in der Abendsonne, shows a subject drawn from the traditional, rural life of Emil Nolde’s homeland to which he was so devoted. We see a row of haystacks sloping backwards, into the open landscape, gently illuminated by the sun, low on the horizon, in brilliant yellow and orange, and throwing soft shadow onto a field of vibrant green. The watercolour is illuminated by the full evening light, the sky with scudding clouds in colours from dark auburn through to radiant orange.
