Willem Gillisz. Kool

Willem Gillisz. Kool - Old Master Paintings

(Haarlem 1609–1666)
Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters near a Town,
signed at lower right: WKool,
oil on panel, 41.4 x 72 cm, framed

Willem Kool was one of the most outstanding exponents of the Haarlem school of painting and produced mostly coastal, river, and winter landscapes. He is considered one of the most important artists of the generation succeeding Jan van Goyen and, similar to the latter, was under the spell of Jacob van Ruisdael. In the present painting, which is highly characteristic of his art, the painter succeeded in creating an animated picture space through the rich figural staffage extending from the middle ground into the background. The homogenous treatment of light also contributes to creating an overall impression of great harmony. Given the low horizon, an illusion of depth is mainly achieved through the proportional arrangement of the skaters on the smooth frozen surface.
