An attribution to Mattia Preti and workshop has been suggested by Professor Keith Sciberras (see literature) to whom we are grateful.
The present painting can be dated to the latter part of Preti’s career, after he had settled in Malta in 1661 and as with most of his late production, the present composition was probably executed with the aid of assistants according to Sciberras.
