Salomon van Ruysdael

Salomon van Ruysdael - Old Master Paintings

(Naarden 1600–1670 Haarlem)
Sailing Boats with a coastal Landscape in the distance,
monogrammed at lower centre, in the vessel: SVR,
oil on panel, 28.5 x 36.5 cm, framed

Salomon van Ruysdael was a student of Esaias van de Velde and mostly painted river landscapes and seascapes which are reminiscent of the works of Jan van Goyen. In 1623, he was admitted as a member to the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem. He appears to have never left his hometown. From the 1650s on, Ruysdael’s palette became brighter, with the result that individual objects become more distinctly accentuated. Nevertheless his landscape compositions were never dramatic; on the contrary, they emanate peacefulness and tranquillity. His seascapes feature a far horizon to allow plenty of space for the artist to render carefully studied clouds in the sky, which in turn evoke a strong pulling effect into the picture’s depth.
