Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot was specialised in the depiction of village landscapes, which during the artist’s early period were reminiscent of the work of Esaias van de Velde. A village road lined by houses and leading deep into the picture’s space is a typical feature of those compositions. The illusion of depth is augmented by the dark house cropped at the margin.
