Josse Francois Le Riche the Younger
(Sèvres before 1782-after 1813 Versailles)
A vase of lilies, roses, tulips and peonies, inscribed verso,
oil on canvas, 46 x 38 cm, framed
This still life was executed by an as yet unidentified court painter to Queen Marie Antoinette, who was known as ‘Peintre des bâtiments de la reine’. He was probably Josse François Le Riche the Younger, who was employed as a flower painter at the Porcelain Manufactory at Sèvres from 1782 to 1789. Le Riche worked for the notorious Comtesse Dubarry, mistress of Louis XV. His work for Marie Antoinette began with the decoration of the Belvedere at the Trianon. His relatively limited oeuvre perfectly suited the facile, cheerful taste in art reflected in the Louis XVI style. His still lifes, three of which, very similar to ours, are featured in the Farés’ book (M. and F. Faré, La Vie Silencieuse en France - La Nature Morte au XVIIIème Siècle, Fribourg 1976, pp. 271–276), correspond to the decorative demands of this period in all respects.
