Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo


(Brescia c. 1480/85 - 1548 Venice) Portrait of a bearded man in a black cap, oil on canvas, 50.5 x 42 cm, framed

Provenance: Henry Doetsch Collection, London; private collection, since 1890.

Literature: B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance, Venitian School, p. 158, fig. 807 (as painted around 1530)

The attribution of the present painting has been confirmed by Keith Christiansen. Savoldo worked in Florence between 1506 and 1508, where he painted, among other works, a Temptation of St Anthony that clearly reveals its influence from the Fleming Jerome Bosch. He later went to Venice, where he spent his most prolific years as a painter, completing commissions for portraits and altarpieces for his patron Francesco Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan. He also worked in Pesaro, Brescia and Milan. Paintings by his hand are in major museums.
