… This is a very beautiful sheet, as I already said on Monday…
As a result of this, I presume that the work in front of me is also one of Wotruba’s drawings of this kind for a planned lithograph which apparently never came into being.
The drawing is not made using charcoal, but rather using lithographic chalk, which creates a clear, strong line.
The drawing extends to the edge of the sheet (which makes sense for lithographic transfer) and creates a more “decisive” impression than comparable drawings in our collection. We hold several similar drawings of heads from this period and of this type, but they have a more sketch-like quality due to the different materials used for the drawing (ballpoint pen, pencil, fountain pen)…
