A magnificent 18th-19th century New Caledonia nephrite sceptre.
Nephrite/wood/vegetable fibres/wool, l.64 cm.
Sceptres with blades of such large scale are extremely rare. The greenish nephrite jade was traded over hundreds of miles with the Maori and other inhabitants in the Pacific.
Whilst the Maori make hei-tiki pendants from it, on New Caledonia it is made into ceremonial blades. These jade stones are believed to have their own mana, handed down as valuable heirlooms and often given as gifts to seal important agreements.
The French texts indicate an early scientific expedition: on 24 September 1853, under orders from Napoleon III, New Caledonia was claimed as a French colony.
Provenance:
Important Viennese collection.
