Positioned on a long beach, the eye is drawn to the Copacabana Bay near Rio de Janeiro. The cliff to the left of the painting is the Corcovado Mountain, not yet bearing the famous Christo Redentor statue which is now so well known. In the background to the right is the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Local men and women are busy loading wares which will be exported by boat, framing the open, rocky landscape of this bay in the Atlantic.
