Giovanni Grubacs - Old Master Paintings

(Venice 1830–1919 Pula)
The Piazzetta di San Marco in moonlight, Venice,
signed lower left,
oil on canvas, 69.5 x 92 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Italy

Literature:
F. Magani, La Venezia dei Grubacs, Ponzano Veneto 2017, p. 89

The present painting is a significant example of the changing evolution of Venetian view painting and the depiction of Venice at night was introduced to the canon of the vedutisti by Luigi Querena (1824–1890) and Friedrich Nerly (1807–1878). Giovanni Grubacs was a celebrated painter of Venetian scenes and he was the son of Carlo Grubacs (1802–1878), who also specialised in Venetian view painting. Stylistically both Giovanni and Carlo usually painted works of fine quality, with meticulous attention to detail and precision, such as the present work.

Giovanni Grubacs followed in the great tradition of seventeenth and eighteenth century Venetian artists and he was heavily influenced by painters such as Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) and Canaletto (1697–1768) and he updated view painting in line with contemporary taste.
