We are grateful to Katlijne van der Stighelen for confirming the attribution of the present painting . She has suggested that Jan Wildens is the painter of the landscape background.
A smaller version of this composition (113 x 151.3 cm) can be found in the Bowers Museum, Santa Ana, California (see K. van der Stighelen, H. Vlieghe, Cornelis de Vos als historie- en genreschilder, in: Academiae Analecta, Brussels 1994, vol. 54, p. 40, fig. 80). A preparatory study for Abraham’s head, formerly in the Benoit Roose Collection in the Rockoxhuis, Antwerp, is the only known example of an oil sketch in Cornelis de Vos’s oeuvre (it is known from his will in 1648 that the artist kept a stock of head studies in his studio).
