Pieter van Halen, a rare artist with a very small oeuvre, had specialised in Italianate landscapes with mythological, allegorical, or historical subject matter. That he was highly appreciated by his contemporaries is underlined by the fact that he was elected chairman of the guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Occasionally he painted the figures in Jacques d’Arthois’s landscapes. The present painting is one of the very few signed works by Pieter van Halen and therefore an important addition to our knowledge of this talented Flemish artist.
