Paulus Moreelse, started his artistic career as a pupil of Michiel van Mierevelt, and was a highly talented portrait painter. Portraits of children are among his best works. A comparable painting, dated 1630, is in the collection of the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see fig. 1; I. Linnik/Y. Kuznetsov, Dutch Painting in Soviet Museums, no. 29, illustrated).
