The subject matter of the present painting comes from the Book of Tobit and the story of Tobias curing his father’s blindness. In the present composition, a seated Tobit reaches out with his hands, whilst his son, Tobias, applies the ointment taken from the gall bladder of a fish caught in the river Tigris, to restore his father’s sight. The angel Raphael, sent by God disguised as a human, stands back from the scene alongside Tobias’s mother.

The present painting by Giovanni Andrea Carlone returns to a composition that his father Giovanni Battista Carlone, had used in a landscape format.
