The present painting is fine example of the work of Gillis Peeters, brother of Bonaventura Peeters. Little is known of the artist beyond his qualifying as a master of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1634. His later works from the 1640s onwards were influenced by Allart van Everdingen.
