"Lion in regal bearing" - Furniture and works of art

Small bronze, partly in the round, signed A. BARTHOLDI (1834 - 1904), end of the 19th century, ca. 24 x 40 x 17 cm. In cared-for condition. (DOC)

This lion – also called “The lion of Belfort” – refers to the monumental stone sculpture measuring 21.5 meters in length and 10.7 meters in height which is a landmark of the French city of Belfort. The sculpture, designed by F. Bartholdi, which stands on the hill of Belfort’s citadel, consists of blocks of red sandstone and commemorates the siege of the city of Belfort in the Franco-German war of 1870/71.
