Karl Kaufmann

Karl Kaufmann - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Neuplachowitz 1843-1905 Vienna)
View of the Vienna State Opera, signed with the pseudonym Charles Marchand, dated 1880, oil on canvas, 68 x 105.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

This year the Vienna State Opera celebrates its 150th anniversary. Designed by the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, the building was constructed from 1861 to 1869, making it the first structure on the new Ringstrasse to be completed.
The Opera House is a major Viennese landmark, drawing not only tourists from all over the world, but also the Viennese themselves. Ever since its opening, the Vienna State Opera has been recognised as one of the world’s leading opera houses. It continues to shape the musical identity of Vienna and Austria to this day.

In the present lot Karl Kaufmann has chosen the view looking up the Kärntner Strasse towards the Stephansplatz, with a silhouette of the monumental south tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral on the horizon.
He renders the details of the Opera House’s Renaissance Revival facade with great accuracy, and bathes Vienna’s city centre in the golden light of a late afternoon.
