A thangka depicting ‘Padmasambhava in the Glorious Copper Mountain Paradise’, Tibet 19th/20th cent. - Antiques

tempera and gilt paint on cloth, image size 71.5 x 53 cm, framed, behind glass, slightly rubbed, (Hr) This thangka depicts the tantric master, Padmasambhava in his heavenly palace. The ‘copper-coloured mountain’, Zangdong palri (Tibetan: zangs mdog dpal ri) is located in the Ngayab Lanka Ling region (Tibetan: mag Yab lang ka'i gling) or Cāmara. The master sits in magnificent garb holding a skull dish, to his feet his two main consorts, the Indian princess, Mandarava and the Tibetan princess, Yeshe Tsogyal. Below his eight different manifestations are visible, by means of which he vanquished the Rakshasa demons. In the aureole around the head of Padmasambhava, heavenly beings hover, and further heavenly and earthly beings are shown in the lower section of the image.
