Lot No. 111 +

A “Correalistic object”, designed by Friedrich Kiesler

New York, 1942, re-edition by Wittmann, Austria, in cooperation with the Friedrich and Lilian Kiesler Private Foundation, manufactured in c. 2002/04, wood structure with black painted ash sides and petrol blue linoleum cover, dimensions: c. 91 cm x c. 87 cm x 39.5 cm. (DRAX)

Like the “Correalistic stool”, this multifunctional object was part of the unusual exhibition design for Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery Art of This Century in New York in 1942. Its abstract free form allows for different positions and combinations, resulting in up to 18 different possible uses (among others, as a coffee table and high desk), thus breaking the boundaries between functional object and sculpture.

Provenance:
designaustria, acquired in about 2002/04 and used in various exhibitions of designforum Vienna, including the exhibition “Floating in Limbo” (2008), and “The Architecture of the Shrine of the Book” (2015) at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
