Vinzenz Kreuzer

Vinzenz Kreuzer - 19th Century Paintings

(Graz 1809–1888)
Penny buns and green russula, signed (scratched) Vinz. Kreuzer, oil on panel, 27 x 35 cm, framed, (W)

Provenance:
Private Collection Vienna.

Exhibited:
Kunstverein Graz, October 1870, Vinzenz Kreuzer, “Schwämme”.

Vinzenz Kreuzer´s early works are characterised by the late Romantic approach to light and choice of motifs, and his preference for depicting nature is visible throughout his oeuvre.
This is also the case in the present lot, which sees the mushrooms reproduced meticulously and with great care. This particularly skilful rendering of nature was noticed by his contemporaries. Thus, the Grazer Tagespost wrote the following about this work, which was exhibited in the Kunstverein Graz in October 1870: “One work by Vinzenz Kreutzer deserves special mention [...], namely the ‘mushrooms’; they are so excellently painted that they would do honour to a modern Dutchman.” (Grazer Tagespost, 6 October 1870, p. 3).
