A salon cabinet, - Works of Art - Furniture, Sculptures, Glass and Porcelain

designed and executed in around 1920, diverse softwoods and hardwoods, walnut veneer, lavishly carved application or figural and ornamental motifs (depicting a Hellenistic mythological scene), fluted feet with eagle heads on all sides, the front with 3 doors, 3 drawers, moulded cornice with figural attachment, the latter signed and dated, H. POVYSCIL 1922, 225 x 196 x 48 cm, well-kept condition with beautiful patina. (MIN)

Formerly from the property of the Manner family

The front side features at its centre Poseidon - god of the sea - with the trident as his attribute, enthroned on a shell carried by a double seahorse and accompanied by mermen. The entire front is divided by means of 5 caryatids (female and male). The male ones share similarities with the seafarers Ferdinand Magellan and Christopher Columbus. The encircling bands and drawer fronts are richly decorated with nereids and mermen riding hippocampi. Stylised dolphins are depicted in the two outer panels of the front. The upper finish is formed by a group of figures. The central male figure in a toga holds a torch in its hand and is flanked by 2 female figures.
