Provenance:

Literature:
C. Bruni Sakraischick, Catalogo Generale Giorgio de Chirico, Electa,
Milan and La Medusa, Rome 1983, vol. VII, tome 2, no. 587 with ill.

De Chirico fully follows the topos of Greek culture in his work Cavalli in riva al mare (Horses by the Sea): antiquity is recalled in the mythological setting, the statuesque force emanating from the bodies of the horses, although somewhat moderated by the animals’ mild expression, and through the ancient ruins that, enveloped in an atmosphere of mystery and strangeness, further evoke the artist’s Metaphysical corpus.

“Profound statements must be drawn by the artist from the most secret recesses of his being; there no murmuring torrent, no birdsong, no rustle of leaves can distract him.”
