Lot No. 584

Hermann Nitsch *

Hermann Nitsch * - Contemporary Art II

(born in Vienna in 1938)
Splatter painting with impasto painting, on the reverse signed, dated hermann nitsch 09 and with dedication, 200 x 160 cm,
on stretcher with the archive no. HF Konrad 09

Provenance:
Private Collection, London - acquired directly from the artist

One of the most prominent exponents of Vienna Actionism, a radical performance group active in 1960s, Hermann Nitsch continued to use performance and gestural action throughout his ongoing career.
In Schüttbild 2009, the action with which Nitsch creates is apparent in the composition of the work itself: a weighty column of blood red paint centres the work, while indications of the artist’s hand dragging through the paint create circuitous patterns that highlight the textural contrast between matte and high gloss paint. Splatters of red, brown and black emanate outwards to the edge of the canvas, direct evidence of the theatrical performance with which Nitsch produces his paintings in a series of numbered actions.
