Velvet, China, c. 91 x 85 cm,
China, c. 91 x 85 cm, 19th century. Two-piece, handwoven silk velvet. This item was probably designed as a cushion cover for a throne. However, both its unusual size and the different orientation of the silk pile in the two panels suggest that they might have also been parts of altar clothing that were put together at a later date. Wefts partly made of pressed golden wire. Good condition, faded colours. (VP)
