Ando Hiroshige

Ando Hiroshige - Antiques (Clocks, Asian Art, Metalwork, Faience, Folk Art, Sculpture)

(Japan 1797-1858) Yushima Tenjin sakaue chôbô (A View from the Yushima Tenjin Shrine, in a square cartouche to the left of the series title cartouche), series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (Hundred Views of Edo, upper right in red longitudinal cartouche), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature (lower left in yellow longitudinal cartouche): Hiroshige hitsu (painted by Hiroshige), censor seal (upper right margin, round): aratame (approved, here cut), publisher’s seal (lower left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present snow-leaf was printed from the original woodblocks (a small unprinted area above the torii in the water and an area far left along its lower cross-beam, which are found in original prints, are also discernible here). The colours of the present sheet are extremely close to the first impression. At the lower border of the image, bokashi is missing and the upper section of the sky is brown instead of blue. The green block above the large tree on the left seems to be the original one and has been printed shifted to the right. The red in the buildings on the left and right was probably partially covered for a while under a passe-partout near the outer edges. The outer edges are not original, the seals are missing. The impression is satisfactory, colours are slightly pastose. For a comparison with the early print see: Melanie Trede and Lorenz Bicherl: Hiroshige. Meisho Edo hyakkei, Cologne 2015, ill. 117, attached to support, mounted, 34.3 x 23.1 cm, (CT)
