A landscape study with ruins at a pond, pen and brown ink, on laid paper, 7,8x 13,2 cm, inscribed “S. Rosa” on the support, browned, mounted, framed, (Sch)

The motif of arcades and vistas through rocks can be found in numerous landscape paintings by Salvator Rosa which he executed foremost during his sojourn in Florence between 1641–1649 and at the beginning of his Roman period between 1650 and 1660 (vgl. Caterina Volpi, Salvator Rosa (1615–1673). “Pittore Famoso”, Rome 2014, Cats. 72, 73, S. 412; Cats. 98, 99, S. 440–41; Cats. 133, 134, Spp. 459–60). A small landscape drawing by Salvator Rosa, which is stylistically comparable (“A hillside landscape at a pond and trees in the foreground, pen brown ink, 5,3 x 14,5 cm) is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. 1970.101.16).

The attribution to Salvator Rosa was confirmed by Prof. Caterina Volpi on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.
