Rome has long been a rich source of inspiration for artists from around the world, being celebrated for its artistic heritage.
Hans Ditlev Martens was one of the first students taught by the Danish painter Christoffer Eckersberg (1783-1853) in Copenhagen, with part of his training covering architectural painting. He arrived in Rome in 1825, where he became a protégé of the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844).
This lot shows a view from the Campidoglio or Capitoline Hill, one of the celebrated hills of Rome. The configuration of the Piazza depicted here was designed by Michelangelo Buonarotti between 1536 and 1546. Through the columns, we can see the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli and, behind it, the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto. The two statues of Castor and Pollux are visible in the middle distance. The work depicts a scene from everyday life on the Campidoglio. A group of people is playing Morra, an Italian finger counting game that was already popular a few thousand years ago in ancient Rome and Greece. A painter is painting under a parasol, implying that this lot was painted from life. In the foreground, a lady is holding a basket containing her baby.
The artist remained in Rome until 1837. His most famous painting, held in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, depicts Pope Leo XII visiting Thorvaldsen’s studio on the Piazza Barberini in Rome in 1830.
