Kolo Moser’s designs for the altar of the Steinhof Church were not accepted by his clients. The ornaments, colours, and symbols he had chosen failed to appeal to their taste. Moreover, the artist met with hostility because of his conversion to the Protestant religion after his marriage with Editha Mautner-Markhof. Resignedly he eventually withdrew from the project. The design of the altar was subsequently entrusted to the mosaic artist Leopold Forstner.
