Empress Charlotte of Mexico - a personal Cross of the Order of San Carlos,

Empress Charlotte of Mexico - a personal Cross of the Order of San Carlos, - Imperial Court Memorabilia and Historical Objects

grand Cross of the Order (Grand Cross), gold, enamel, original red bow with applied gold mirrored monogram "MC" (Maximilian/Charlotte) with Mexican Imperial Crown, cross 7 x 5 cm (without band ring), monogram 3,5 x 2 cm, in original case with applied mirrored gilt silver monogram "MC" with Mexican Imperial Crown, case 20 x 14,5 cm, c. 1866, (Lu)

A personal cross of Empress Charlotte as Grand Mistress of the Order of San Carlos. The Order of San Carlos was founded by Emperor Maximilian on 10 April 1866 and was an exclusively female order. The Grand Cross of the Order was only awarded to ladies of the higher nobility and ruling houses (including Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Empress Eugenie of France). Only very few awards are known. In contrast to other order crosses, the present order cross shows the empress’s mirrored monogram on the ribbon. Also, all the other crosses were made of gilt silver. The present piece is therefore a unique item made exclusively for the empress.

Provenance:
Empress Charlotte of Mexico, by inheritance to Archduchess Elisabeth (“Erszi”), only daughter of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, and heirs.
