Peter Fendi

Peter Fendi - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Vienna 1796–1842)
A mother and children, playing in the water, watercolour, pencil auf paper, 4,5 x 6 cm, mounted, framed, (Hu)

Those works of Peter Fendi which enjoyed utmost popularity and were especially admired during his lifetime were appealing depictions of young mothers with their chubby faced and boisterous children, from: Walter Koschatzky, Peter Fendi, Salzburg-Wien 1995, p. 112.)
A quite comparable composition shows the sheet „Children with little ships“ of 1835 (Inv. Nr. 25093 Albertina Wien). The arched arrangement of the figures and their arm gestures are framing the scene. In the watercolour of the Albertina the children are moving the little toy boat with a little stick and using a blowtube as opposed to the present drawing where the children are trying to fetch something with several small sticks. The child in the background seems to have fallen into the water; it makes the impression that it is crying as it has his hand at his eyes. The sketchlike execution of the sheet makes the drawing quite dynamic. As customary with Fendi the preliminary pencil drawing and the paper blank in the background of the watercolour were included in the depiction.
