Michael Zeno Diemer studied under Gabriel Hackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer in Munich from 1884 onwards. Initially he was occupied with painting watercolours of Alpine motifs, later he executed impressive panoramic battle scenes. In 1894 he painted the Giant circular Panorama Painting in Innsbruck depicting the Battle of Bergisel of 1809. From 1902 onwards he repeatedly travelled to Iceland and the Orient. In 1909 Diemer was commissioned to paint the landing of the Zeppelin airship in Munich for the Deutsches Museum. The painter had a special preference for painting high mountains and water. He became popular for his watercolours which became widespread as illustrations and reproductions.
