Lot No. 584

Anton Schiffer

(Graz 1811–1876 Vienna)
A View of the Town of Loket in the Czech Republic (Elbogen an der Eger), inscribed on the reverse and dated Elbogen Anton Schiffer 1841, inscribed, dated and signed Stadt Elbogen im August 1841 Anton Schiffer, oil on canvas, 28 x 36 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection Carl Josef Wawra (1839–1905), Wien;
Estate auction C. J. Wawra, Vienna, 7 December 1905, lot 238;
Private Collection Vienna.

The Bohemian town of Loket is situated near a granite hill within an almost circular loop of the River Eger (Ohře). The city resembles a bent elbow due to the natural course of the river, and from this feature it derives its name in both German (Elbogen) and Czech (Loket).

In the present lot, Anton Schiffer chooses the northwesterly view of the city, with the chain bridge built in 1836 and the striking castle complex.
