Lot No. 607

Ludwig Theodor Choulant

Ludwig Theodor Choulant - 19th Century Paintings

(Dresden 1827–1900)
Roman Forum, signed Choulant, oil on canvas, 35 x 46 cm, framed (frame damaged)

Compare:
Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19, Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. I, 1, p. 180, no. 28 (Forum Romanum, Aquarell, Dresden 1877).

The painter Ludwig Theodor Choulant is best known for his views of Italy, but was a very unadventurous character. He was born in Dresden, studied architecture and painting at the Dresden Academy of Art and remained in his home town throughout his life. The present lot testifies both to his masterful handling of architecture in painting and to his skill with atmosphere and colour. The viewer’s gaze wanders over the Roman Forum in the evening light, with the Arch of Titus at the centre of the composition. Along the axis is the Via Sacra, the Arch of Septimius Severus is visible in the rear left. On the right, the three large arches of the Basilica of Maxentius rise and the domes of Santa Maria di Loreto form the end of the picture emerging from the background.
