"One day I was looking at the red flower patterns of the tablecloth on a table, and when I looked up I saw the same pattern covering the ceiling, the windows and the walls, and finally all over the room, my body and the universe. I felt as if I had begun to self obliterate, to revolve in the infinity of endless time and the absoluteness of space, and be reduced to nothingness. "

Yayoi Kusama

With her net and point structures, the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama lays a second level of perception over reality. It is a playful but obsessive way of dealing with repetitive structures and reflections, which the artist has been appropriating in the form of hallucinations since early childhood.

The non-conformity and rebellion against her authoritarian parental home led the artist in the 1950s to New York, then the stronghold of Abstract Expressionism. With her monochromatic “Infinity Net” works and the “Infinity Dot” pictures that began to appear from the 1960s onwards (so to speak — an overlapping of the world with uniform and consistent compositions), she formed an antipole to the Abstract Expressionists. Kusama is interested in the physical representation of the idea of infinity. Through their illiminality, the forms employed become a means of dissolving themselves in art.

The canvas in Early Spring - Infinity Dots A.A.B.B., covered with dots of varying sizes, celebrates the absoluteness of the surface. The plastically worked dots are placed in front of the dark background like a pulsating foil. They draw the viewer into a potentially infinite pictorial space.
