(Ancona 1947–1998 Rome)
Opera ubiqua, 1997, signed and titled on the reverse, mixed media on photograph laid down on board, 22 x 44 x 7.5 cm cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection (acquired directly from the artist)

The concept of ubiquity fascinated Gino De Dominicis as it implied a distortion of the Western rational concept of space. The concept of space in ubiquity is appropriately combined with the Eastern tradition of time that  simultaneously comprehends repetition and anticipation. In opposition to that the Western concept of time constantly moves towards the future and never returns. Ubiquity moves back and forth continuously evoking a different concept of time that can’t be imagined as something that gets “consumed” leading inevitably  to an end that the artist perceived as death.
The present work, Opera Ubiqua depicting a woman whose enigmatic expression recalls Leonardo’s Gioconda along with the small map of an imaginary Sumer town, was executed in 1997 one year before Gino De Dominicis died.  It is one of a series of works all titled Opera Ubiqua, executed that same year. Gino De Dominicis who surrounded himself with an aura of mystery and unavailability developed his reputation as much out of an absence as from a presence, thus themes like enigmas, ancient Sumer civilization, Eastern philosophy, the perception of death often appeared in his work.
