Daß Vergangenes vorbei ist, ist ja nur ein Gerücht. Daß einer, der sich der Tradition verbunden weiß von Gestern ist, ist nicht minder ein Gerücht. Vielmehr taugen wohl jene Geister für die Zukunft, die der flachen Welt der Gegenwart die Tiefe jener Zeit gönnen, aus der sie wächst. Der Kumpf ist keiner, der rührseliger Nostalgie die Farben leihen würde, aber er ist einer, der gerne alle Zeit um sich versammelt, Traditionen formt, statt sie zu brechen.

That the past is past is just a rumor. So is the old saw that a man rooted in tradition is living in the past.
Probably those spirits are suited for braving the future, who grant to the flat world of the present the full depth of time from which it grew.
Kumpf is not one to lend his colors to mawkish nostalgia; yet he is one who likes to gather all times and eras around himself. He gives shape and structure to traditions instead of breaking them.
