Lot No. 536

Shahram Karimi *

(born in Shiraz, Iran 1957, works and lives in Germany and New York)
Red Angel, 2008, signed, dated, acrylic on canvas, 200 x 135 cm, on stretcher

Provenance:
Galerie Brigitte Schenk, Cologne

His paintings are memories of his homeland, Iran, and usually feature people, flowers and parts of Iranian villages. As a bicultural Iranian, Karimi is exploring his historical and personal identity through his painting. His works help him to connect to his own past with contemporary forms. He establishes a relationship with his childhood by incorporating elements of Iranian poetry into his paintings, partly out of fear of losing his Iranian identity in the fast-moving present.
The picture fragments of the painting “Red Angel” rise from a misty grey and blue background. They show the viewer that memories live on in us and influence our current actions.
Shahram Karimi’s works have been exhibited in numerous countries, including Iran, Turkey, Germany, the USA and Switzerland. Between 2004 and 2005, he taught at the Dresden University of Fine Arts.
