We are grateful to Fabrizio Magani for his help in cataloguing this lot.
The present painting displays marked parallels with another “testa di carattere” by Mattia Bortoloni, the Portrait of a young Mathematician, in a private collection. Both paintings likely date to the same period, between 1722 and 1725, by the time the artist had completed his fresco painting in the Villa Cornano, Piombino (see R. Mangili, La testa di carattere a Venezia nel Settecento: l’inedito paradigma di una raccolta coeva, in: Arte Veneta, no. 59, 2002, p. 145, fig. 30).
