Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai (1760-1849) - Asiatics, Works of Art and furniture

Kôzuke Sano funabashi no kozu (Boat Bridge at Sano in the Kôzuke Province; Old View), from the series: “Shokoku meikyô kiran” (Rare Views of Famous Bridges in the Provinces); series and picture title in a yellow-ground cartouche at the upper right, signature: zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (also translated: saki no Hokusai Iitsu hitsu); the signature is at the right of the series and picture cartouche, publisher Eijudô, i.e. Nishimuraya Yohachi. Red publisher’s seal at bottom edge of the image, kiwame censor seal (above publisher’s seal), dated c. 1834. Sources: Seiji, Nagata (ed.), Hokusai, Berlin 2011, p. 346, no. 294 (Katsu- shika Hokusai Museum of Art), Calza, Gian Carlo: Hokusai, Berlin, 2006, p. 323, no. V. 47.7 (Honolulu Academy of Arts no. 21931), Forrer, Mat- thi: Hokusai. Prints and Drawings, Munich 1991, no. 34 (Peter Morse Collection), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, no. 21.10190 (Internet source), Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, no. Jp 2547,2943 and 1381 (Internet source) etc. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, this sheet was printed from the original woodblocks. Characteristic damage to the original printing plate is also evident on this sheet. For example, to the left of the person behind on the bridge, an unprinted horizontal line is noticeable in the water below the shoreline. On the right side the sheet is slightly trimmed. This is a late print, since the lines of the black block are wide and partly broken. The colour blocks appear to have been saturated by paint, as a result of which the colours have not applied evenly. The yellow has faded considerably. The blue plate used to print the people on the bridge is shifted. The sheet is stained and creased in the area of the cartouche, trimmed along the border lines, corners backed with adhesive tape on the reverse, 25.3 x 37.3 cm, (CT)
