On the reverse of the panel a handwritten remark: Darnaut, Vienna IV, Belvederegasse 23 and a label Künstlerhaus Vienna 1906, Nr. 576; confirmed by Nikolaus Domes M. A.

Hugo Darnaut was one of the important Austrian painters of the so-called “Stimmungsimpressionism” (Mood Impressionism). He studied with Eduard Peithner Lichtenfels at the Vienna Academy and with Andreas Achenbach, Robert Meyerheim and Johannes Wortmann in Düsseldorf. From 1877 on he was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Between 1893 and 1912 Darnaut rented Plankenberg Castle in the Vienna Woods, which accomodated a school of landscape painting until the death of Emil Jakob Schindler. Motifs of the castle and from its surroundings have been firmly tied with Austrian art history through works by the artists’colony of Plankenberg, including Emil Jakob Schindler, Carl Moll, Olga Wiesinger-Florian, Marie Egner and Hugo Darnaut.
