Portrait of Achilles Bischoff (1795-1868), according to an old inscription on reverse, pastel on paper, 34.5 x 28.5 cm, oval image area, framed, frame damaged. (BH)

Achilles Bischoff worked as a cloth manufacturer in Livorno, Bergamo and Como from 1815 to 1840. From 1843 onwards, he was involved in the Rhine Shipping Company and was one of the founders of the Giro- und Depositen-Bank in Basel. In 1848 he stood in the first parliamentary elections and represented the canton of Basel-Stadt in the National Council until 1852. A street in Basel is named after him.
