Lot No. 53

Gustav Reinhold

Gustav Reinhold - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Framed 1798-1849 Königsee/ Berchtesgaden)
Hunters Resting at the Summit, Scene in the Salzkammergut, signed, dated Gustav Reinhold (18)44., oil on canvas, 28 x 36 cm, framed, (KN)

Gustav Reinhold came from a family of painters and, like his brothers Heinrich and Friedrich Philipp, turned to landscape painting. He was fascinated by the Salzkammergut, especially the area around Berchtesgaden and Lake Königsee, where he eventually settled. Together with Friedrich Gauermann he undertook extensive journeys through the Austrian and Italian Alps in 1836, 1839 and 1843. The present lot, dated 1844, is one of the painter’s later works. It shows Reinhold at the height of his career and the image was certainly inspired by his trip in 1843.
We see a few hunters resting at a vantage point and enjoying the wide view that opens up before them. In addition to the beauty of the impressive mountain panorama, Reinhold also conveys a sense of camaraderie and joyful exhaustion that comes with reaching the summit. (KN)
