A rare Sledge-Base Chair, designed by Arnold Bode - Design

c. 1950, for Korrekta Werke, Bad Wildungen, Germany, the base composed of curved chromium plated and crossing steel bands, foam upholstery on steam-moulded ash frame, light green textile fabric covering, height approx. 79 cm, width approx. 60 cm, depth approx. 80 cm, height of seat approx. 38 cm. This innovative design, using a new type of foam material, was first presented in 1951 at the Constructa show in Hanover and later used for seating in the German pavilion at the XIth Milan Triennial. Bode was honoured with a gold medal for the overall concept of the pavilion’s interior design. In the 1950s, Arnold Bode worked primarily as an interior decorator and designer. In 1955 he founded the Kassel documenta together with Werner Haftmann, since then one of the most important universal exhibitions of contemporary art. Bode remained in charge as its artistic director until 1968.
