The present lot is also visible in the background of a different painting by Albert Küchler, called “Colonel and Mrs. Paulsen”, 1838 that can be seen in the Thorvaldsen museum, Copenhagen. Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) commissioned Küchler to paint a portrait of his daughter Elisa, his son-in-law Colonel Fritz Paulsen and his two grandchildren. Thorvaldsen’s bust stands on the cupboard. Küchler produced both works in Rome in 1838.

Albert Küchler is associated with the Danish Golden Age, studying under Christoffer Wilhem Ekersberg (1783-1853) at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He mainly painted portrait and genre scenes and settled in Rome in 1830 becoming popular among the community of Danish artists.
