We are grateful to Prof. Flavio Tossi for providing the catalogue entry for this lot which will be included in the Cesare Dell‘Acqua catalogue raisonné in preparation.

This composition is a study for a large allegorical painting that shows the large commercial wealth of Trieste. It is the first of three known studies, the other two are in Belgium. One is a watercolour kept in the Prints and Drawings Department of the Royal Library and the other is an oil painting in a private collection. These two studies, as well as the final version (kept in the municipality of Trieste), are larger as the lower part of the image is not shown in this study.
